The Roland A-37 is a great MIDI Keyboard Controller for the home studio or a performance rig. It has 76 semi-weighted keys, midway between a synth and full piano touch. The keys have adjustable velocity sensitivity, as well as aftertouch. This is a serious keyboard, more durable and with a much more solid feel than cheaper consumer-oriented controllers, but still at a reasonable price. Two key zones, each with its own MIDI channel, for split and layer capability. Zones are stored in patches and can be turned on or off with front panel buttons. 128 user patches to store program and controller information, recalled immediately using numeric buttons no stepping up and down through patch lists (unless you want to). Performance controls pitch bender/modulation lever, data slider (assignable for volume or other MIDI control #), inputs for both a sustain footswitch and an expression pedal (pedals not included). Front panel buttons to transpose the keyboard and send Sequencer Start/Stop messages. Three-character LED display that shows the current patch number when performing or the parameter values when editing. Easy recall and editing of patch parameters using the front panel buttons and numeric display no layers of menus to navigate. More complex patch configurations are possible, such as enabling/disabling controllers, velocity or aftertouch on each zone; shifting each zone up or down 2 octaves; presetting the volume, pan, reverb, and chorus levels for each zone. Two MIDI outputs that can be assigned to either zone in each patch. This allows flexible routing of MIDI information to your sound modules. Plus, if you have another keyboard or MIDI control device plugged into the MIDI In port, the A-37 combines the information for a single stream of MIDI data going out to your modules from Output A no need for a separate MIDI merger unit. All in all, this is a great MIDI controller, with the right balance of control capabilities and ease of use. Being more of an organist/synthesist, I love the feel of the semi-weighted keys. Its was one of the primary keyboards in my performance rig for a lot of years. I hate to part with it, but I’ve scaled back my rig and no longer need it, so I’m looking for a good home for it. It’s powered by an external power supply (included) or 6 AA batteries (not included). Ser manual is also included very useful for getting acquainted with all the parameters when learning to program the patches. The controller has been reset to the factory patches. All keys and controls function perfectly and the front panel is in great physical condition. The sides and bottom of the case have some scuffs and scrapes from being used in a lot of performances (see photos). Please note: This is a MIDI controller keyboard. It does not contain sound-generating circuitry. It must be connected to one or more sound modules via MIDI. Also, there is no USB port; if you want to connect it to a computer, you’ll need a MIDI-to-USB interface. These are fairly inexpensive. Connect the interface to the MIDI In and one of the MIDI Outs, connect your sound modules to the other MIDI Out, and you’re all set to send MIDI data to your computer and to use either your computer or the keyboard to control the sound modules without a lot of cable switching.
